Volleys were the main focus this morning at the last full day of the All-American Tennis Camp. After learning proper volley technique and placement, as well as correct doubles movement and positioning, we practiced volley rallies and moving together as a doubles team. This practice certainly paid off as this morning’s Olympic game was Aerobic Volleys. Competitors had to keep their feet moving for an entire game to 4 points or risk hearing the dreaded words POINT PENALTY! In the red division the Teeny Tiny Tigers continued to dominate, now leading the pack with a score of 14 points. The Purple Pickles are heading up the white division with a score of 11 points, while the Purple Flying Squirrels from Narnia make an excellent showing, leading the blue division with 13 points.
The focus on doubles continued in the afternoon session as the All-American Tennis Camp doubles tournament began. After dividing campers into north side and south divisions, we learned how to play a 12 point tie-breaker, as well as work on the serve-and-volley skills and doubles movement we perfected in the morning session. A congratulation goes out to our south side winners Annie and Krish and our north side winners Riku and Claire. Way to go!!
The threats of rain proved to be harmless as we entered into our final evening session of the week. While some campers enjoyed private lessons, games, and beat the pro, the college teams Texas, Butler, and Duke competed in the college tennis consolation draw. Texas defeated Butler 16-12, while Duke stopped UNC 15-13. Tonight’s talent show was truly entertaining, with Counselor Andy’s group winning a pizza for their skit titled “Granny Knows Best” Other skits included Joanna’s “Tennis Shore”, Alex’s “The Decision”, and Ashley’s “Tennis Camp Apocalypse”. Congratulations to Andy’s group. Camp winds down tomorrow with a review of strokes and the epic all-camp Around-the-World. Stay tuned, you don’t want to miss it.

Today was the perfect day to play tennis. Being our first full day here at the last week of camp, everyone enjoyed their time on the courts today. Bright and early, Dave reviewed the forehand with everyone. All campers were able to videotape their strokes so the staff could give the campers a unique experience that many have not had before. By watching videos all week of their strokes, campers can truly understand what they’re doing right and on what they need to work. The morning session also included the backhand overview. Both the one handed backhand and the two handed backhand were discussed. The morning session also started off with our Olympic teams. The game Rally Count is counselor Joanna’s all-time favorite game so she demanded that the camp started with that. Who knew she could count that high
Olympic point updates will be at the bottom.
The afternoon session reviewed forehand and gave a chance for campers to videotape their backhands. Again, the campers enjoyed this special experience. Campers also experienced college drills for the first time. These are intense ball feeding drills that have campers running every which way! At least the staff enjoys them. To finish the session, campers played pass the racquet for Olympic points.
The evening session included two more matchups. Here are the results:

After a somewhat hectic check-in at our last but not least All-American Tennis Camp this summer, the day ran smoothly. A quick evaluation was made of all the campers during the afternoon and Director Dave introduced the forehand. Dave introduced the different types of the forehand grip, weight distribution, and the swing. The session seemed to fly by before anyone knew it
The evening session is a bit different than match play weeks. Campers have the opportunity to sign up for private lessons, beat the pro, play on the games court, or play a match. All campers were put on to college teams for night matches. All teams are guaranteed two matches. If campers did not play tonight they play tomorrow. During this mini-tournament, all matches play seven games. Each team keeps the games their team wins, whether they win or lose. This method teaches players to keep trying even if they are down in the match. The match results from today are as follows:
Syracuse beat Duke 15-13
Jessica vs. Kelly 4-3
Tom vs. Jenny 3-4
Krish/Jack vs. Paul/Jeffery 4-3
Grace vs. Emily 4-3
OSU beat UNC 21-7
Annie vs. Matt 5-2
Alex/LaBron vs. Austin/Michelle 3-4
Sally/Devon vs. Tori/Ben 7-0
Molly vs. Caitlyn 6-1
Tomorrow Dave and staff will review and videotape the forehand and introduce the backhand. No rain is in the forecast, so it should be a fantastic day at camp!

Thank the tennis gods that there were no 8am matches to be played today. The whole camp was grateful to sleep in an extra hour
Morning session was devoted to a scrappier style of play when the director, Safari Todd in an all white getup, discussed defensive singles strategies. Campers practiced several drills that even Federer and Nadal still do. They used these skills to help with half court Up the River, Down the River. To end the morning session, the semi-finals of the singles tournament. The results are as follows:
Jarad def. Jeffery (8-3)
Andrew def. Christian (8-2)
The afternoon session we focused on doubles and getting “ONE MORE BALL!” Director Todd, aka giveaway energy sphere Todd, gave us several fantastic overhead drills, which forced the baseline players to work on getting back ONE MORE BALL. If you couldn’t tell, the theme of this afternoon is getting ONE MORE BALL! The power highlight of the afternoon was by Andrew Ong. Jarad tried to play a cutesy volley during a demonstration. This was promptly ran into his stomach by Andrew. Laughter ensued, but Jarad continued after a dramatic showing of agony. All campers were okay Director Todd promises
The evening session was moved up a bit because of movie night. Today was the finals! Congrats to Arizona State coached by staff member Joanna. The results are as follows:

Today we planned for rain but luckily we didn’t have to use it! Even though it was cloudy with the threat, lots of tennis was played on the courts today. Some campers even played on their own time and hit for nearly 8 hours today! That’s gotta be some kind of record or something
The morning session started bright and early at 8am. The staff started the campers with running, stretching, and a basket of short ball/wide ball/deep ball. Everyone continued to work and reviewed volleys. All campers should remember to split step and volley on the same side of their body! To finish the morning session the whole camp played up the river, down the river on all twenty half courts. Jarad had the task of starting from the bottom and moving all the way up to the top. He almost made it, but it was Steve who ruined his 14 half court streak run. Go Steve!
The afternoon session flew by so fast with some great poaching and serving signals strategies. By the end of the session, everyone at least understands why signals are used and the motives behind it. To end the afternoon session, a long game of shortball/volley/overhead (aka Rush and Crush) was in order. Some how Director Todd (aka GTL) and Coach Lori won the game. Perhaps some questionable line calls
The evening session consisted of some more long grueling matches during College Tennis. The results are as follows:
Texas A&M beat U of Washington
Jake vs. Jarad (5-8)
Tom vs. Erica (8-2)
Ryan vs. Niko (6-4)
Hannah A vs. Dakota (8-1)
Owen/Tyler vs. Dan/Carter (8-3)
Arizona State beat OSU
Emily vs. Candace (8-5)
Hannah S vs. Allison (8-4)
Christian vs. Danielle L (8-6)
Laura/Danielle B vs. Sean/Devesh (8-3)
Todd/Alec vs. Michael/Will (8-2)
Nebraska beat Rice
Andy vs. Steve (8-3)
Jeffery vs. TJ (8-5)
Morgan vs. Rebecca (8-0)
Andrew vs. Brennan (8-2)
Nick vs. Maria (8-2)
Mary vs. Erin (2-8)
Jessica vs. Alia (8-7)
Team standings so far…
Arizona State 3-0
Nebraska 3-0
Rice 1-2
OSU 1-2
Texas A&M 1-2
U of Washington 0-3
Tomorrow will be more and more tennis! The semi-finals of the singles tournament, another round of the college matches, and even more tennis strategies. Stay tuned
